I started the project yesterday by beginning to make the pattern.
For this, I compare the weapon to the characters height to get it right in proportion. Mind that this is just vaguely estimated! From this picture, it looks as if the sword’s hilt would reach up to Dave’s ribcage, which would make 130cm in comparison to my height (in comparison to a 13 year old boy it would probably be around 110cm but this is not about the sword having the right overall size but fitting well in proportion).

I simply took my reference image, dragged&dropped it into a photoshop document the size of 200x100cm and scaled it to have an exact length of 130cm to meet my proportions. If it’s a smaller prop I’m making, this is the point where I cut the image in various A4 images and print them, tape them together and am finished- but for such a giant project with a really small reference image, I prefer to paint the pattern myself.
